Immigration

Some of our relatives came through Ellis Island and some did not. We have Quantities and Qualities, Censuses and Directories, History Books and Military Information. Most of it will be generalized to begin with, and as more information is learned we will included it as part of our own history.

Polish Immigration:

During the 1870's, there were approximately 50,000 Polish immigrants in the United States, and that number grew to 200,00 in 1882 and a million by 1890. In America the years of 1870-1914 are often referred to as the Great Immigration. A new wave in immigration began after World War II when many Poles found themselves outside of the newly placed Polish borders in the Soviet Union or Germany. The Displaced Persons Act, passed in 1948 in the United States, admitted more than 200,000 new immigrants onto American soil. During this period, martial law was also strengthened in Poland, causing many to flee the country for the freedom in America.

Ellis Island:

We hear 'New York' and automatically think 'Ellis Island', but New York immigration prior to 1892 was through the Port of New York, formerly known as Castle Garden (also known as Castle Clinton). .
