| We spent most of the day in Old San Juan, seeing some sights and enjoying
the annual Festivale de San Sebastian. |
 |
| This was taken on the way to San Cristobal, a very old fort. You can see
it in the background. |
 |
| We didn't go inside, but walked around the outside a little bit. We wanted
to keep going because there were other things to see and we had gotten stuck
in traffic on the way in to the city, so we were a little behind schedule. |
 |
| Just walking around the streets of Old San Juan, looking for places to
shop. Lots of street art vendors, food, drink, live music, and people. |
 |
| Neat looking fountain with a huge, beautiful statue in the center. On
the way out to El Morro. |
 |
| We did the Walk of La Princesa, which leads to El Morro Castle. |
 |
| El Morro is at the northwestern tip of Old San Juan and is surrounded
on three sides by water. The huge lawns in front of the castle are well
kept and attract lots of kite-flyers and picnickers. You can see a high-flying
kite at the top of the photo. |
 |
| The castle was about to close so we didn't get to see the whole thing,
but this cannon is an original and points out a window at the Atlantic Ocean,
protecting the island from pirates and marauders. |
 |
| Gus wanted me to take this picture so Dad could see all the guns down
below :-). We couldn't go down there because it was closed. |
 |
| Walking out of El Morro, on the way back to Old San Juan, you can see
the city behind the big lawns. In the lower left you can see a particular
part of the city called La Perla. It's an area of Old San Juan that most
locals have never been to because it houses drug dealers, runaways, and
dangerous people! |
 |
| The streets were packed with partying, singing, dancing people. |
 |
| There were several very nice "shows" on the main stage. |
 |
| A local celebrity apparently. A newsman we think. |
 |
| This beautifully lit totem pole is a fairly new addition to the square,
only a few years old. |
